

‘Brokeback Mountain’ Gets June 25 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray Disc Release

Kino Lorber on June 25 will release the LGBTQ+ romantic drama Brokeback Mountain in a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Disc combo pack.
The 2005 film, directed by Ang Lee, grossed $83 million at the domestic box office and a total $178 million, worldwide. The film was hailed by critics as both a classic romance and a milestone for queer cinema.
Adapted from the 1997 short story of the same name by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain is centered around the complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid, Kata Mara, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, and David Harbour.

The combo pack includes the film on both a triple-layered UHD100 disc and a dual-layered BD50 disc. The 4K release comes from a new HDR/Dolby Vision master from a 4K scan of the original camera negative; the Blu-ray Disc, from a new HD master, also from a 4K scan of the original camera negative. In both cases, the film is presented with 5.1 Surround Sound and 2.0 Lossless Stereo.
Both editions include a new audio commentary from film historian and writer Julie Kirgo. The Blu-ray Disc also includes several previously issued extras, including a making of documentary; interviews with Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, who wrote the screenplay; a featurette on director Lee; a photo slideshow; and the original theatrical trailer and TV spots.
Brokeback Mountain won Oscars for Best Director (Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay (McMurtry and Ossana) and Best Original Score (Gustavo Santaolalla). It was nominated for five additional Oscars, for Best Actor (Ledger), Best Supporting Actor (Gyllenhaal), Best Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams), Best Cinematography (Rodrigo Prieto) and Best Picture of 2005.
