‘Dune: Part Two’ Topped Disc Sales in May to Take Over Year-to-Date Lead
June 13, 2024
Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two was No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for May 2024, according to Circana’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions.
The sci-fi film, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s original novel about galactic politics on a desert planet in the distant future, was released on disc May 14 and topped the weekly sales chart for three-consecutive weeks. The strength of initial Dune: Part Two sales were also high enough to push it to No. 1 on the list of top sellers for the entire year to date.
A collection of both of Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies was No. 3 for the month, and 2021’s Dune: Part One was No. 8.
The top April seller, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s release of MGM’s The Beekeeper, slid to No. 2 in May. The actioner stars Jason Statham as a former secret operative engaged in a mission of revenge against a network of computer scammers. As an April 23 release it didn’t have enough time to crack the year’s top 10 by the end of April, but with May sales it climbed to No. 10 on the year-to-date chart.
The No. 4 May seller was the 1994 supernatural comic book movie The Crow, which was re-released by Paramount Home Entertainment May 7 in a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition.
No. 5 for May was Sony Pictures’ Madame Web. The “Spider-Man” spinoff arrived on disc April 30, giving it just a couple days to place on the April chart, where it was No. 3, but it also had enough sales in subsequent weeks to remain in the top 10 for May.
The only other newcomer in the month’s top 10 was, at No. 6, Lionsgate’s Imaginary, a horror film about a little girl’s imaginary friend that manifests to torment her family.
On the year-to-date chart, the arrival of Dune: Part Two pushed Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes to No. 2 for the year. Warner’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, No. 9 in April, remained No. 3, while Universal’s Oppenheimer slid two spots to No. 4.
Warner’s Wonka and Universal’s Trolls Band Together each slid a spot to No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, while Universal’s Migration held steady at No. 7. That meant Disney’s The Marvels dropped two spots, to No. 8. Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny slid a spot to No. 9.
The ascension of The Beekeeper meant Universal’s Five Nights at Freddy’s and Lionsgate’s The Expendables 4 dropped off the year-to-date top 10 chart.
