Jack Quaid Action-Comedy ‘Novocaine’ Looks to Edge Out ‘Monkey 17’ at Weekend Box Office

The new Paramount action-comedy Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, whose character is incapable of feeling physical pain in the pursuit of his kidnapped girlfriend, looks to edge out last weekend’s chart topper, Warner Bros. Pictures’ sci-fi drama Monkey 17 ($9.1 million), with a projected$9.3 million in ticket sales for the weekend ended March 16, according to new data from BoxOfficeReport.com.

Rounding out the expected sluggish weekend box office (less than $34 million in projected revenue across Top 5 releases) is expected to be the new Focus Features spy drama Black Bag (projected $6.7 million), directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchette as married intelligence agents — with the wife suspected of treason and investigated by her husband.

Other new releases include Warner Bros. Discovery’s Looney Tunes comedy The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (projecgted $3 million) and the A24 thriller Opus ($2.1 million), starring Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), two-time Oscar winner John Malkovich, and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Juliette Lewis.

Returning movies include Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World (projected $5.7 million); Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man, starring Pete Davidson ($2.8 million); Sony/Studiocanal’s Paddington in Peru ($2.75 million); Neon’s The Monkey ($2.7 million); and Focus Features’ Last Breath ($2.5 million), starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu.
