Debuting at No. 2 on the streaming movies chart was Universal Pictures’ black comedy Cocaine Bear, which started streaming on Peacock April 14. The film, directed and produced by Elizabeth Banks, is based on the true story of drug smuggler Andrew Thornton II, who on Sept. 11, 1985, jumped from an auto-piloted Cessna after dropping packages of cocaine in the forest near Blairsville, Ga. Thornton died when his parachute failed to open, while much of the coke was believed to have been ingested by a bear, who promptly died. In the movie version, the bear does not die; instead, he becomes addicted to the white powder and embarks on a killing spree while chasing after more.
The Netflix sequel Murder Mystery 2 fell from the top spot to No. 3 on the streaming originals chart. Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler reprise their roles as sleuthing married couple Nick and Audrey Spitz in the sequel, which started streaming on Netflix March 31. They are now full-time private detectives investigating a new mystery.
Remaining at No. 2 on the streaming originals chart was Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” season three of which started streaming in weekly episodes March 15. The 12-episode new season finds the newly promoted AFC Richmond soccer team facing ridicule as media predictions peg them to finish last, while team manager Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work and personal issues back home.
Remaining at No. 3 on the streaming originals chart was “Star Trek: Picard,” which is reaching its series end after three seasons. In the series, Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Jean-Luc Picard from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
