Samba TV: 10.6 Million U.S. Households Watched, Streamed Trump’s RNC Speech
July 22, 2024
More than 10.6 million U.S. households tuned in to watch on linear television and streaming former President Donald Trump and 2024 GOP presidential nominee’s closing speech July 18 at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
The tally was higher than the GOP debates in 2023, which ranged from 2 million to 6.6 million households, but much lower than the 25.2 million households that watched the first presidential debate of 2024 between Trump and President Joe Biden.
Looking at some key swing states, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin saw overindexes in viewership compared to the United States as a whole, with Wisconsin overindexing by the highest margin (plus 16%). On the other hand, households in Georgia and Nevada were less likely than the average U.S. household to watch. This mirrored trends surrounding viewership of the first presidential debate of 2024, potentially indicating that undecided households in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are following the news and political events more closely than those in Georgia and Nevada.
Older, white households overindexed based on viewership of Trump’s speech at the RNC. There was a plus 12% overindex among white households, plus 15% among those ages 65-74, and plus 31% among those 75 and older.

Separately, Nielsen reported that an estimated 25.38 million viewers watched the fourth and final night of the RNC that was carried on 14 television networks. The audience peaked at 28.4 million viewers during Trump’s speech in the 10:45 to 11 p.m. window.
